Things to do
Now open at the Middle East’s most spectacular new museum, the Louvre Abu Dhabi’s second exhibition explores the history of the world in miniature: curated by the Bibliotheque national de France (BnF), Globes: Visions of the World (until 2 June) shows what the world looked like – or rather, what we thought it looked like – up to 2,500 years ago. As many as 40 globes are on show, many among the oldest in the world, alongside rare archaeological remains, stunning scientific instruments, priceless Arab manuscripts and some seriously ancient maps. Louvre Abu Dhabi director Manuel Rabaté says the exhibition was particularly well suited to his museum. Not only does it show some of the oldest globes and astrolabes known to the Islamic world, but aligns with the museum’s intention to “narrate the story of mankind”.
One of the biggest family-friendly edu-tainment events in the Middle East, the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair (April 25 – 1 May) returns this month to Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre with 1,320 exhibitors from 65 countries showcasing thousands of books and a special storytelling corner for children.
