Holidays are all about R&R, right? That is, not rest and relaxation, but increasingly, running and, well, more running. Next month 115+ people will pound 250km through Jordan’s Wadi Rum desert, in the latest, five-day edition of ultra-marathon (the name for more-than-marathon races) series Ultra-X (5–13 October).
“Ultra-running is absolutely booming on a global scale like we’ve never seen before,” says co-founder Jamie Sparks, who’s seen demand soar 110–180 per cent every year since 2015. Website Run Ultra now lists over 1,800 races, with the most popular runs selling out in minutes, despite entrance fees that can run north of $1,000. Why put in such legwork on your vacation? Along with the endorphin-fuelled euphoria, UK Trail Running Association chairman Lindley Chambers explains: “As our regular, mundane lives become ever more sedentary, we have a need for something more.” ultra-x.co
