Eid celebrations at Yas Island
A three-day celebration at Yas Marina
Come Eid, Abu Dhabi locals descend on Yas Marina for their annual three-day festival to mark the end of Ramadan. There’ll be nightly fireworks at 9pm as well as food stalls around the marina. Italian restaurant Cipriani is perhaps one of the best places to watch, their wrap-around terrace gives the best view of the fireworks – best enjoyed with a bellini.
Gaming Festival at Yas Mall
Starting on 5 June and continuing until 15 June, Yas Mall is turning into a gamer’s paradise celebrating internationally renowned video games like Fortnite and Minecraft for the second Yas Gaming Festival. There’ll also be a VR experience stand and you’ll get the chance to try out retro consoles with 80s classics like Space Invaders. There will be talks from industry experts and the chance to compete with other gamers to win daily prizes. Plus, it’s totally free to attend.
Prayers at Sheikh Zayed Mosque and the Founder’s Memorial
On the morning of the first day of Eid al-Fitr, Muslims gather for prayer to celebrate breaking the fast. In Abu Dhabi, this means visiting the biggest mosque in the city – Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque – which will be filled with thousands of people for one of the most important days in the Muslim calendar. After early morning prayers, people then spend the rest of the day visiting close relatives and friends.
Shopping the sales
Perhaps the most important fashion season for those in the Middle East is during Eid, when hundreds of malls have sales and discounts for the tradition of wearing new clothes over the three-day period. Expect the malls to be packed so get down early to Abu Dhabi mega-malls Marina Mall, The Galleria and Yas Mall. At the Galleria, there are workshops for the last five days of Ramadan like face painting, henna art and lantern making. There’s also the Ramadan & Eid Festival (May 7 to June 5) at ADNEC – a huge consumer expo and the ideal place to shop for Eid gifts.
