Such is La Mamounia’s fame that it even has its own stop on the sightseeing bus, with camera-wielding tourists coming to snap these seven hectares of symmetrical palm-strewn gardens and turquoise-tiled entrance.
The 100-year-old hotel is no stranger to celebrity either: it stood in for an Abu Dhabi resort in Sex and the City 2, featured in a Hitchcock film, and counts the Rolling Stones and Sir Winston Churchill as past guests (you can spend the evening sipping G&Ts in the low-lit, wood-panelled bar named after the man himself).
Check into a plush room decked in hand-carved cornices and kaleidoscopic mosaic tiling, then hot-foot it to the cavernous spa, where you can get the traditional hammam treatment in palatial, Majorelle blue-splashed surroundings. Oh, and be sure to snap a photo on the raised lounger in the Insta-famous indoor pool. It’s equally easy to lose track of time in the jasmine-scented gardens, with ice-cream parlour and organic veg plots tucked among the cypresses.
Today, Marrakech has its fair share of five-star heavy hitters, but La Mamounia still wears the crown.
