Where is home?
Kingston – there’s nothing like the Jamaican sunshine. So, even though I have more freedom to travel now, Jamaica will always be home.
Where in the world have you felt happiest?
Jamaica. But professionally you never forget your first gold medal as an Olympic athlete. And, for me, they were won in Beijing – so that will always be a special city for me.
Name a place that most lived up to the hype
Miami never disappoints. I have always had a great time there.
Which is your favourite city?
London. For so many reasons: for my success on the track there, for the partying, for the people, for being able to watch football. I’m spending a lot of time there at the moment.
Your favourite hotel?
Claridge’s in London always looks after me pretty well.
Best thing you’ve learnt on a trip?
If you don’t like the local food, you can always count on McDonald’s chicken nuggets anywhere in the world!
Earliest travel memory?
I will always remember a small city in Hungary called Debrecen – that is where I first competed on the world stage in 2001 when I was 14 – it was the start of everything.
What’s the best dish you’ve eaten on your travels?
No doubt, one of the best things about being a runner was travel. But I never found a meal as good as jerk snapper fish at home.
I always pack…
Music, for sure. I listen to a lot of hip hop: Jay-Z, Lil Wayne, Ludacris. I never travel without music.
My best-kept travel secret is…
I don’t really have one – if it’s good, I will tell people about it. No secrets.
When I’m in the mood for some retail therapy on my travels, I must visit…
I can shop anywhere – but I have had some great trips in LA.
When I’m in the mood to paint the town red, I hit…
London. It’s the city I’ve partied in the most since my retirement. And the good thing now is that if I get in at 4am I don’t get a call from my coach telling me off.
My favourite travel pastime is…
I try and embrace everything – culture, sports, partying, people – this life I have been given is a gift and I make the most of it wherever I am in the world.
