Where is home?
Home is Cloudwalk, my farm in Connecticut. And then there’s our floating home, Eos, which has taken us around the world twice [Von Furstenberg is married to media mogul Barry Diller]. We spend as long as four months a year at sea.
Where in the world have you felt happiest?
I feel happiest when I swim. This year I have swum in the Pacific, the Indian Ocean, the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic. I swim for hours; for me, there’s no bigger bliss. Name a place that most lived up to the hype Bhutan is a country that will not disappoint, no matter how fabulous you think it will be.
Which is your favourite city, and why?
Paris, I think… You can walk it forever.
Describe your favourite view
The view from the top of the volcano on Stromboli, a small island off the coast of Sicily, is just incredible… I love to spend the day climbing it. By the time I normally reach the summit, night-time has fallen and watching the flames in the dark is a very special experience.
What’s the best hotel you’ve stayed in?
I love the Peninsula, Shanghai. It’s super-modern but with delightful accents of 1920s Shanghai.
Earliest travel memory…?
When my mother put me on the train alone at age 10 from Brussels to Paris. I felt so independent and grown up.
Have you ever been to Abu Dhabi?
I love Abu Dhabi. I went for Formula 1. It was a very unique experience and one that I cherish.
What would you recommend as a suitcase style essential for every traveller to the Middle East?
Life is a journey so to learn how to pack is essential. If you pack lightly, you live lightly.
My favourite travel pastime is…
Discovery – wherever I go. It’s important to always look for something unexpected and unique.
To celebrate the Etihad Airways Formula 1 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix (23–25 November), Diane von Furstenberg has designed a set of exclusive Etihad Airways neckscarves and ties that will be worn by all cabin crew throughout the month of November
