Time to clear some space on the coffee table. British-Indian journalist Debika Ray has launched a bi-annual journal dedicated to South Asian culture. London-based Clove magazine covers the stylish goings-on in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal and Bhutan, and has a pleasingly broad remit. Published earlier this year, the first issue includes a photo series by Juergen Teller in Kolkata as well as a nicely thought-out piece on Bangladesh’s new Modernist architecture. The point, says Ray, is to offer a “different perspective” on the Indian subcontinent than that of most Western publications, who too often cover the region with a “sense of the exotic”. Hence the cover line: “Shifting the lens”.
