You can imagine location scouts for the next 007 movie checking out volcanic Ulleungdo Island, where a swooping, white, seashell-like structure looks like a Bond villain’s lair. But far from housing nefarious deeds, Healing Stay Kosmos in South Korea is designed to channel chi energy fields associated with the clifftop site. The hotel has a spiral layout inspired by the yin-yang symbol and guest rooms themed on universal elements, like Mars (fire) or Mercury (water), assigned according to guests’ birth date. “I wanted it to be a container of energy rather than a building,” says Seoul architect Kim Chanjoong, “a kind of celestial tool to contemplate natural phenomena.” Whether or not you buy into the spiritual side, it certainly looks heavenly – bagging the Wallpaper* Design Award 2019 for Best New Hotel, no less. Cooking from El Bulli-alumnus Sun-jin Hwang adds to the out-of-this-world allure.
