Forget #vanlife, the global movement that saw urban opt-outers hit the road in camper vans, now, more and more millennials want to hit the world’s waterways. Faced with high property prices and a new yearning for one-ness with nature, house-boat living in cities like London has increased by 153 per cent since 2012. According to Rock the Boat, a book published this month by Gestalten, hoteliers have taken heed of the trend: but while France now has the Village Flottant de Pressac (20 over-water cabins only reachable via row-boat); and bookings are steady at Bert’s Barges in London, the ultimate “float-el” booking is still in Tanzania. A short boat ride from Pemba Island, the Underwater Room at the Manta Resort is a three-level hotel suite anchored in the Indian Ocean with a roof deck for sunbathing, a mid-level lounge for doing not much, and a downstairs bedroom with aquatic viewing gallery. Whatever floats your boat.
