Turkey is about to have a seriously big year: according to tourism minister Mehmet Nuri Ersoy, the country is set to bounce back from the estimated $2.5 billion tourism loss of 2016 with almost 50 million foreign travellers in 2019 (a near 25 per cent uptick on 2018). How come? Well, the fall of the Turkish lira has helped. But so will Istanbul’s soon-to-open New Airport (the biggest in the world, apparently). Either way, the revived Turkish Riviera is the likely go-to with a new wave of hotel openings on the Bodrum Peninsula adding extra allure: that includes Ian Schrager’s Bodrum Edition (with restaurant from El Bulli alum Diego Muñoz) as well as the new Six Senses in Kaplankaya, which joins classic hotel-beach club Maçakizi (pictured) where second-generation owner Sahir Erozan says he’s bracing for a big summer. Bodrum, like Turkey, is back.
