Remember when hotel amenities extended to a gym and free newspaper? Washington’s Eaton DC ups the ante with an on-site radio station and “Radical Library”. The 209-room property wants to be far more than just a crashpad for travellers – namely, “to truly subvert and transform the traditional hotel model into a platform that could inspire change”, according to founder Katherine Lo.
Billed as the world’s first activist hotel, Eaton DC livestreams podcasts from politicos and swaps the traditional in-room Bible for the UN Declaration of Human Rights. The hotel has gathered something of a reputation for being “anti-Trump”; so, was its location a few blocks from the White House deliberately provocative? “Our mission has never been about picking a fight with politicians,” says Lo. “But we have a point of view that we certainly won’t shy away from.” Right on.
