Festival season’s a distant dream in the northern hemisphere, but Down Under the live music calendar’s just heating up. This year’s must-attend? New, one-day, EDM-meets-hip-hop fest Wildlands (28 December) at Brisbane Showgrounds. But why gamble on an untested event? Well, it isn’t the organisers’ first rodeo, coming from the teams behind Victoria-based Beyond the Valley (28 December – 1 January 2020) – previously headlined by Stormzy and The Kooks – and Perth’s Origin Fields (31 December).
Wildlands’ line-up strikes all the right notes, too, with alt-dance trio Rüfüs du Sol, who jet in as part of an all-Australia and US tour, meeting British R&B up-and-comer Ella Mai (pictured). “The thing I love about Brisbane is that it’s so musically and culturally diverse,” says Wildlands co-founder Saran Bajaj, “and now it’s finally starting to step out from Sydney and Melbourne’s shadows.”
